At Borrowed & Blue, we're focused on matching the best possible vendors to each couple planning a wedding on our site. In the interest of transparency, we want to communicate to our vendors how we calculate our search rankings.
How are Borrowed & Blue's search rankings calculated?
Great question! The structure and weighting of our search rankings is focused entirely on helping introduce the best, most relevant wedding vendors to each couple using our site. We don't do 'pay-to-play' like other wedding sites out there—no vendors can buy their way to the top of our rankings. These are the best search results out there, because they are focused purely on vendor relevance and quality.
There are 4 primary factors that go into calculating our search rankings at Borrowed & Blue.
1. Geographic Relevance
The first set of variables that determines search ranking is the vendor's geographic relevance to the specific user's search. We want to make sure that if you are searching for venues in Napa, we're not showing you venues in Sacramento. We also look at the body of work we have for each vendor, and prioritize them based on how much experience they have working in the location the couple is getting married.
2. Vendor Quality
The second set of variables that determines search ranking is the vendor's quality, as measured by both couples and vendors they have worked with previously. If a vendor is in a lot of other vendors' referral networks, that's a vote of confidence for that vendor. If that vendor is a consistent winner of our vendor-voted Best of Borrowed & Blue Award, that is a great vote of confidence by the local vendor community. If a vendor consistently gets 5 star reviews from their B&B couples, that's a good sign.
3. Vendor Engagement
The third set of variables that determines search ranking is a vendor's engagement with Borrowed & Blue, starting with their profile completeness, and including how punctually they reply to inquiries and questions from our couples. An engaged vendor is good for our couples because it ensures they will get their questions answered in a timely fashion and it is evidence that that vendor will be easy to work with after they have been booked.
4. Transaction Readiness
The final set of variables relates to how ready the vendor is to be able to conduct transactions with our couples on Borrowed & Blue. We've done extensive, detailed research about what our couples want to make their wedding planning process easier, and a common answer is that couples want to be able to pay vendors online, with credit cards or via e-Check, and keep all their payments and agreements in one place. When our vendors are 'marketplace ready', we know that working with them will be easier for our couples.
5. User Activity
We take into account the clicks and behaviors of our website visitors. As couples browse weddings, listings, and related content, we learn a lot about which vendor listings are popular. We also know which vendors' listings tend to generate inquiries from couples. It's important that our search results reflect the preferences of our users. Thousands of times each day, B&B couples vote on which listings and weddings interest them, and we bend our search results to reflect those votes.
